Choose social channels by the job you need them to do. Audience size tells you where a message could travel. Engagement describes responses to content. Return on ad spend describes attributed revenue from paid campaigns. A platform can lead on one measure and lag on another, so a single league table is a poor place to start a budget discussion.

These social media marketing statistics for 2026 cover global scale, U.S. platform use, business adoption, organic content, paid advertising, marketer priorities, and customer care. Measurement dates sit beside the figures: a report published this year can still describe last year. Use the numbers to shortlist channels and set questions for a campaign, then use your own customer and cost data to decide where to expand.

## Social media usage statistics: scale without double counting

1. Manochi estimates 5.79 billion active social media user identities globally in April 2026. Identities can include more than one account belonging to the same person.[ DataReportal / Manochi.](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-mid-year-global-update-report)

2. That estimate equals 69.9% of the global population in April 2026. It describes the scale of social activity, not a deduplicated audience for your campaign.[ DataReportal / Manochi.](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-mid-year-global-update-report)

3. Global social media user identities increased 5.4% in the year to April 2026. Growth in the category does not establish growth for every platform.[ DataReportal / Manochi.](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-mid-year-global-update-report)

4. The same estimate added 294 million identities over that year. Avoid adding platform audience totals together to calculate your potential customer base.[ DataReportal / Manochi.](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-mid-year-global-update-report)

For a regional launch, start with the country and age group you can serve. A global audience figure is useful context for a strategy document, but it cannot tell you whether enough qualified buyers live within your delivery area. Cross-platform reach also needs an overlap estimate: a person who sees the same campaign in several feeds is still one prospective customer.

## U.S. platform use: YouTube leads, but age changes the shortlist

Pew’s 2025 platform-use survey asks U.S. adults whether they ever use a service. Treat that as an adoption measure. It does not say everyone uses the platform every month, sees ads, or follows businesses. The following entries share that U.S. adult denominator unless a narrower age group is named.

YouTube and Facebook belong on a broad U.S. shortlist. Instagram deserves a closer look when the intended buyer is younger. Reddit and X can still matter for a specific community even when their nationwide adoption is smaller. Choose a relevant conversation and a credible contribution before choosing a posting schedule; a large audience cannot compensate for a message that has no reason to appear in that feed.

*Ever-use and daily use from separate Pew 2025 U.S. adult surveys.*

Daily use answers a different planning question: how often might there be another opportunity to encounter the message? Repetition needs new creative or a useful continuation. Reusing the same promotion across every service may save production time, but it also leaves each channel’s context out of the decision. For a video-focused plan, compare formats and measurement windows in our [ video marketing statistics.](https://www.productgrowth.blog/p/video-marketing-statistics)

## Other platform audiences use different definitions

Registered members and active users should sit in separate columns in a planning sheet. They are useful measures of a platform’s scale, but they do not form a fair ranking of reachable buyers. The following company figures also describe different dates.

15. LinkedIn reported more than 1.3 billion members globally in June 2026. Membership is a registration measure, not monthly activity.[ LinkedIn.](https://news.linkedin.com/2026/linkedin-reaches-the-milestone-of-100-million-users-in-brazil)

*LinkedIn’s public advertising page.*

[Public platform page](https://business.linkedin.com/advertise)

For business-to-business campaigns, use professional relevance to narrow the question: which roles should recognize the problem, and which accounts can buy? A broad membership count cannot show that your content reaches those roles. Pair a targeted content plan with qualified conversations or pipeline contribution, using the same definition over time. Our [ LinkedIn marketing statistics explain its B2B benchmarks.](https://www.productgrowth.blog/p/linkedin-marketing-statistics)

16. Pinterest reported 640 million monthly active users at June 30, 2026, using its authenticated-user definition.[ Pinterest / SEC.](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1506293/000150629326000104/pins-20260630.htm)

*Pinterest’s public business page.*

[Public platform page](https://business.pinterest.com/en-gb/)

17. Pinterest’s monthly active users increased 11% versus June 30, 2025. That is growth in activity under its definition, not a prediction of campaign returns.[ Pinterest / SEC.](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1506293/000150629326000104/pins-20260630.htm)

Pinterest merits a test when the purchase benefits from visual consideration: a customer comparing possibilities, planning a project, or deciding what an end result should look like. Set a concrete downstream action for that test, such as a product detail visit or a saved shopping shortlist. Measure the quality of that action alongside its cost.

18. Snap reported 971 million monthly active users for Snapchat in Q2 2026. This company count uses a different activity definition from LinkedIn membership.[ Snap / SEC.](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1564408/000156440826000047/snap-20260803xexx991pressr.htm)

For Snapchat, ask whether your team can produce material that suits the audience and the placement, then check local inventory and targeting. The scale figure can justify investigating a channel; it cannot justify duplicating another channel’s budget. Keep adoption, active users, ad reach, and customers separate when you report the result.

## Business adoption varies by company size and sector

Eurostat’s 2025 enterprise survey covers selected EU sectors and businesses with at least ten employed persons. Its definition includes social use for activities beyond advertising, such as recruiting and collaboration. The data helps put business adoption in context; it is not a survey of marketing spend.

19. 63.57% of covered EU enterprises used some form of social media in 2025.[ Eurostat.](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/SEPDF/cache/49114.pdf?v=1274919592382048)

20. 89.09% of large covered EU enterprises used social media in 2025.[ Eurostat.](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/SEPDF/cache/49114.pdf?v=1274919592382048)

21. 60.59% of small covered EU enterprises used social media in 2025.[ Eurostat.](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/SEPDF/cache/49114.pdf?v=1274919592382048)

22. 83.15% of covered EU information and communication enterprises used social media in 2025.[ Eurostat.](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/SEPDF/cache/49114.pdf?v=1274919592382048)

23. 44.6% of covered EU transport and storage enterprises used social media in 2025.[ Eurostat.](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/SEPDF/cache/49114.pdf?v=1274919592382048)

A small team should decide what it can maintain before copying a large company’s channel list. Include the time to answer questions, approve claims, adapt creative, and report outcomes. If one person owns all those tasks, a reliable presence on a focused set of channels may be more useful than a neglected presence everywhere. Adoption rates describe what other businesses do; they do not prescribe your staffing plan.

## Organic engagement: use the formula before the benchmark

Socialinsider’s Q2 update reports follower-based engagement alongside its international brand benchmarks. The update does not separately state its sample size or coverage. The denominator is followers, while the counted interactions vary by platform. Its full-year tables describe 2025; the figures below come specifically from its Q2 2026 update. Compare your account with a relevant platform and peer group rather than turning these rates into a return-on-investment ranking.

24. TikTok averaged 2.70% engagement by followers in Socialinsider’s Q2 2026 update.[ Socialinsider.](https://www.socialinsider.io/social-media-benchmarks)

25. Instagram averaged 0.45% follower-based engagement in Q2 2026 in the same update.[ Socialinsider.](https://www.socialinsider.io/social-media-benchmarks)

26. Facebook averaged 0.13% follower-based engagement through Q2 2026 in the same update.[ Socialinsider.](https://www.socialinsider.io/social-media-benchmarks)

27. X averaged 0.10% follower-based engagement through Q2 2026 in the same update.[ Socialinsider.](https://www.socialinsider.io/social-media-benchmarks)

![Socialinsider Q2 2026 follower-based engagement: TikTok 2.70%, Instagram 0.45%, Facebook 0.13%, X 0.10%. Platform interaction formulas differ.](https://www.productgrowth.blog/media/posts/social-media-marketing-statistics/03-organic-engagement.webp)

| Platform | Q2 2026 rate | Interactions in publisher formula |
| --- | --- | --- |
| TikTok | 2.70% | Likes, comments, shares, saves |

| Facebook | 0.13% | Reactions, comments, shares |
| X | 0.10% | Likes, reposts |

A rate based on followers can rise when additional viewers interact with content while the follower denominator stays fixed. A reach-based rate answers another question: what share of the people who saw the post responded? Keep both labeled in reporting. If your dashboard changes the denominator, rebuild the baseline before announcing an improvement.

Use an organic test to learn which topics and formats earn a meaningful response. A saved explanation, a qualified question, and a broad like count have different value for different campaigns. Write down the action you care about before looking at the results. Then preserve winning ideas while adapting the execution to the channel. ## Social media advertising statistics: a growing market and uneven returns

28. IAB and PwC estimate U.S. social advertising revenue reached $117.7 billion in 2025.[ IAB / PwC.](https://www.iab.com/news/digital-ad-revenue-climbs-to-nearly-300b-as-iab-celebrates-30-year-anniversary/)

29. The U.S. social advertising category grew 32.6% year over year in 2025.[ IAB / PwC.](https://www.iab.com/news/digital-ad-revenue-climbs-to-nearly-300b-as-iab-celebrates-30-year-anniversary/)

30. Social represented 40.0% of U.S. digital advertising revenue in 2025, according to IAB and PwC.[ IAB / PwC.](https://www.iab.com/news/digital-ad-revenue-climbs-to-nearly-300b-as-iab-celebrates-30-year-anniversary/)

Those figures describe money received by the advertising industry. They do not measure the profit earned by advertisers. A growing market makes paid social a budget question worth investigating, while your decision still depends on the customers you acquire, what they contribute, and how much creative and fulfillment cost. Keep market growth separate from your campaign economics.

For context, IAB and PwC reported $88.8 billion in U.S. social advertising revenue for 2024. [IAB’s 2024 report.](https://www.iab.com/news/digital-ad-revenue-2024/)

Metricool’s September 2026 report analyzed Meta and TikTok campaigns from connected advertisers, comparing the same six months of 2025 and 2026. These sample results can help set test questions. They are sensitive to geography, objectives, attribution, and the businesses represented, so they should not become a promise about what your next campaign will cost.

31. 91% of advertisers in Metricool’s Meta and TikTok sample ran paid social on Meta alone.[ Metricool.](https://metricool.com/social-ads-study/)

32. 70% of the tracked advertising budget went to bottom-of-funnel campaigns.[ Metricool.](https://metricool.com/social-ads-study/)

33. Metricool reported $2.42 in revenue per dollar on sales ads for the average U.S. brand in its study.[ Metricool.](https://metricool.com/social-ads-study/)

34. The study-wide sales-ad average was $4.57 per dollar. Its broader geography and advertiser mix limit direct comparison with a U.S. plan.[ Metricool.](https://metricool.com/social-ads-study/)

Return on ad spend divides attributed revenue by media spend. It leaves out product costs, refunds, creative work, and other operating expenses, and attribution can credit a sale that would have happened anyway. Before expanding spend, agree on the reporting window and the definition of a new customer. Use a holdout or another suitable incremental measurement where feasible, and judge the result against a margin-based target.

## Marketer priorities explain pressure, not proven performance

HubSpot’s 2026 survey of more than 1,100 global social media professionals reports what respondents prioritize and believe. Those answers help explain team decisions, but a marketer’s preference does not establish a causal effect on sales.

35. 59% of surveyed social media teams named increasing brand awareness their top goal in 2026.[ HubSpot.](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/hubspot-blog-social-media-marketing-report)

36. 77% of surveyed marketers said authenticity matters more than production value for their brand on social.[ HubSpot.](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/hubspot-blog-social-media-marketing-report)

37. 60% planned to increase influencer investment in 2026.[ HubSpot.](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/hubspot-blog-social-media-marketing-report)

38. Only 37% said tying social activity to business outcomes was easy.[ HubSpot.](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/hubspot-blog-social-media-marketing-report)

Give each campaign a primary outcome that fits its job. For awareness, define the audience whose recognition matters and a way to observe that change. For consideration, measure useful visits or qualified enquiries. For sales, reconcile attributed orders with customer and margin data. A creator partnership should have a clear audience fit and an agreed delivery scope before follower count becomes part of the price discussion.

## Customer care belongs in the social budget

Sprout Social’s August 2026 pulse survey of 2,250 consumers adds a practical staffing question. A campaign invites contact as well as attention. These are the respondents’ stated expectations; the public summary does not establish a global population estimate.

39. 27% of surveyed consumers planned to use social media more for customer service than in the previous holiday season.[ Sprout Social.](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/the-state-of-social-media/)

40. 55% preferred to contact a company through direct messages rather than make a complaint public.[ Sprout Social.](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/the-state-of-social-media/)

41. 31% said they would leave a comment on a company post.[ Sprout Social.](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/the-state-of-social-media/)

42. 68% expected a response within 24 hours.[ Sprout Social.](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/the-state-of-social-media/)

![Sprout Social August 2026 consumer survey: 55% prefer direct messages, 31% would leave a comment, 13% would tag the brand directly.](https://www.productgrowth.blog/media/posts/social-media-marketing-statistics/06-social-care-contact.webp)
*Preferred ways to contact brands for care. Sprout Social Q3 2026 Pulse Survey.*

Assign an owner for incoming messages before launching the promotion. Make the path from a public question to a resolved issue clear, including who handles order information and when a specialist takes over. A response deadline is useful only when the team can meet it. Build coverage for weekends or campaign peaks into the plan, and keep customer details out of public replies.

## Turn the statistics into a channel decision

Start with one audience, one job, and one measurable next action. Shortlist channels from the relevant geographic and demographic data, then check whether the message belongs in those environments. Use organic benchmarks to set a starting hypothesis about content response. Use paid benchmarks to design a bounded spending test. Reserve time for the conversations that test creates.

For example, a team selling a visual consumer product in the U.S. might shortlist Instagram and Pinterest, while keeping YouTube for a deeper explanation. That is an illustrative plan, not a forecast of returns. Give each channel a role and adapt the same product story to that role. Compare qualified product visits, orders, and support workload with a consistent time window before increasing the budget.

The useful question is whether the next unit of effort or spend produces enough value for your business. These figures show where to look and what to measure. Your expansion decision should come from the cost and quality of the customers, conversations, or recognition your own campaign creates.

**Next job: Set a return-on-ad-spend target.** Calculate the ratio from revenue and spend, then compare it with the margin your campaign must preserve. Calculate your break-even return from contribution margin, then set a test budget and reporting window.
